SmartEnCity, Towards Smart Zero CO2 Cities across Europe

Cities play a key role in fighting climate change. Energy demand and CO2 emissions are particularly high in urban areas. At the same time,  urban density allows more alternatives for energy-efficient housing, eco-friendly transport and service provision.

SmartEnCity’s vision is to create Smart Zero Carbon Cities that are more sustainable and inclusive, improve citizens’ quality of life, create jobs and wealth, and offer equal growth opportunities.

SmartEnCity, a project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, aims to develop a systemic approach for transforming European cities into sustainable, smart and resource-efficient urban environments in Europe. We aim to develop strategies that can be replicated throughout Europe in order to:

  • Reduce energy demand
  • Maximise renewable energy supply

Activities include retrofitting in buildings, integrating infrastructures, developing sustainable mobility and the intelligent use of Information and Communication Technologies.

The SmartEnCity concept will be defined, planned and implemented in the three Lighthouse demonstrators: Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), Tartu (Estonia) and Sønderborg (Denmark). The process will be replicated in the two Follower cities: Lecce (Italy) and Asenovgrad (Bulgaria). We will encourage a SmartEnCity Network of further cities interested replicating the approach elsewhere in Europe.

ICARUS European Project

The European Project of R&D ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations) is a project co-funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union.

The objective aims to develop integrated solutions for search and rescue teams that act after disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Italy or the tsunami in Japan. Unmanned vehicles (terrestrial, aerial and maritime) will be equipped with sensors to detect victims that will facilitate the rescue works..

The project, led by the Royal Military Academy of Belgium, has a budget of 17,5 million euros and is composed of a consortium of European institutes and companies, NATO and the Portuguese Navy.

Irrigest LIFE project

The main objective of IRRIGESTLIFE project is the development of an optimized irrigation system for the irrigation of urban parks and gardens, but also adaptable to any other area in which an improvement in the management of irrigation is necessary.

The project is supported by the LIFE programme of the European Union.

This new irrigation system is expected to save up to 30% of current water consumption. Four prototypes will be developed and integrated in a GIS system, that will allow municipal officials to manage the irrigation of parks and gardens in a optimal way.

The system will be tested in a pilot project in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, which is known to have been European Green Capital in 2012.
